Are any of you readers planning to see a film in Kingston anytime soon? I warn you now, the Odeon will soon be overrun by Twilight, Twilight and more Twilight. Due for release in the UK on the 9th of July, this overrated hit is already being booked solid, leaving no room for any non-vampire wannabes to enjoy themselves. In fact an acquaintance of mine was ‘lucky’ enough to be dragged to a convention on said film, and was decidedly out of place among the sea of black capes, plastic fangs and red contacts. Miss Clarendon went on to state that she could not enjoy herself one bit after being “scared to death by a crazy fan girl covered in fake blood stains”.

The Twilight takeover is not only restricted to the cinema. Anywhere you glance in Kingston you can find signs of Meyer mayhem. Whether you are team Edward or Team Jacob there is something for everyone, be it a poster in H&M or a T-shirt from Primark. Even at home it is hard to escape from the bandwagon called Eclipse, with Volvo’s latest advertisement featuring members of the main cast and actively encouraging viewers to book their own place in viewing Twilight’s latest golden child.

Of course, all this hype centring on vampires and werewolves may not be completely groundless. I happened to have read most of the Stephenie Meyer series before the films even came out and enjoyed them quite thoroughly. However the films do not offer a complete understanding of original events, as is often the case with such adaptations, leaving a confusing plot for those in the dark. I have no reason to believe Eclipse will be any different from it’s predecessors in this aspect. Then again the films have indeed been successful in their use of special effects, particularly the invention of the werewolves.

To conclude, I have nothing against those who enjoy Twilight, but perhaps everyone would be slightly less disturbed if it is kept within reason.
