Old Walcountians crash out of the RFU Junior Vase
Old Walcountians’ run in the RFU Junior Vase came to an unceremonious end as they were dumped out 45-0 by a clinical and ruthless display from Eastern Counties 1 side Newmarket.
Walcountians entered the match with a weakened side and were forced to recall veteran centre Mike Bramble who had made his 1st XV debut 25 years ago.
However, Walcountians fought hard in the first quarter and had an equal share of territory and possession, which raised hopes that they might pull off victory.
It took Newmarket 26 minutes to open the scoring, which they did when their three-quarters switched direction of play after getting the ball from a ruck in the Walcountians 22.
But thereafter, the home side piled on the agony for the Old Boys and, by half-time, were 17 points up following another try and a penalty.
The second half was painful for Old Walcountians as they were outgunned by a highly competent Newmarket pack and their defence was opened up by the skilful home backs.
The Old Boys were never able to bring their three-quarters into the game as they were shut down by the home side’s blanket defence, and the only ground they made were through forward drives by the pack and the boot of fly-half Tom Harrison.
Newmarket ran in five more unanswered tries and a penalty by full-time to complete a miserable afternoon for the Old Boys.
This weekend, Walcountians take on Old Whitgiftians in a ‘must win’ match if they are to pull away from the relegation zone in Surrey One.
Kick-off at Clock House is at 2.30pm.
Old Walcountians: Beales, McGibbon, Tutton, Bramble, Moorhead, Harrison, Stone, Cowlin (P), Richardson, Cowlin (S), Bell (Dom), Sadler, Baker, Fowler, Connor.
Subs (not used): Bell (Dan), Gill.
