Sunbury-based Flair Gymnastics has hosted the an Invitational Disney Themed Competition, the biggest UK event of its kind, at the Walton Xcel Leisure.

It drew more than 600 recreational gymnasts and trampolinist aged five to 17 from clubs across the UK, including Flair’s other centre in Woking and Bisley, Alleyn’s Junior School (Dulwich), De Mond Gymnastics (Jersey), Richmond Gymnastics (Richmond), Pointers (Caterham) and Spring Fit (South Croydon).

Due to the volume of entries, the event was split into 48 categories.

On arrival, the children were greeted by Mr Incredible, aka Peter Osborne – a stage and film actor with credits including Kenneth Branagh’s Frankenstein – who was the MC for the day.

There was also performance from television and West End musical Star Daniel Boys, whose credits include BBC’s Any Dream Will Do and is currently starring in Avenue Q.

Bryony Foley of Alleyn’s said: “My team had the most amazing time at your event.

“The Flair staff made us feel most welcome and the organisation has been wonderful. We would love to enter again next year.”

The Mayor of Elmbridge, councillor James Vickers, and his wife were in attendance, and counc Vickers presented medals to the children at the end of the competition.

He said: “It is excellent to see so many young people involved in this sport. I would like to thank the children and, most importantly, the parents for supporting and encouraging their children to take part in gymnastics,”

Flair’s founder and company director is Richard Dwyer, a former South East gymnastics gold medallist, who became the UK’s youngest stunt man at age of 21 in 1998.

His film credits include Guy Ritche’s soon-to-be-released Sherlock Holmes and Gulliver’s Travels.

He said: “Our events stem from my passion to inspire the younger generation to gain vital confidence and life skills, using gymnastics as the tool.”
