Craig Watkins says it feels like he is coming home after rubber-stamping a return to Sutton United.

The 21-year-old, who has had spells with Exeter City and Havant & Waterlooville, is due to become United boss Ian Hazel's first summer signing today, two years after he left Gander Green Lane.

Watkins said: "It definitely feels like I am coming home.

"I live in Worcester Park, so I am just five minutes away from the ground.

"Sutton United is where I made my name and I scored a lot of goals during my first spell with the club, so it is exciting to come back.

"If the move didn't excite me, then I wouldn't have re-signed.

"Ian Hazel contacted me in the middle of last season about a move, but things fell through then. It is good to be back here now."

Watkins admits the move to Conference club Exeter, after a string of impressive performances under former boss John Rains, may have been too much, too early.

"I was only 19 when I joined Exeter and, looking back, maybe it was a bit much for me to move away from home at such an young age," he said.

"I scored a lot of goals at Sutton before my move and, when you do that, you think you can take on the world.

"I still want to become a professional footballer and, hopefully, I can recapture the form from my first spell at Sutton."

Hazel expects Watkins to be the first of several close-season signings.

"I am in talks with a few players and I expect more deals to be completed in the next week or so," he said.

"I have always said I will wait to get in the right players rather than just bring in players for the sake of it.

"I will be using Saturday's game against Walton & Hersham to run the rule over a few more players."
