British No 1 Andy Turner insists the Daegu World Championships next week are not the be all and end all when it comes to building up to London 2012 – but it would be nice to get a medal.

The European and Commonwealth 110m hurdles champion, who has been struggling with a hip injury this season, will go head-to-head with the likes of Dayron Robles, David Oliver and Xiang Liu.

And 30-year-old Turner says the fact he will be treating it like a run-of-the-mill Diamond League could mean an upset is on the cards.

“The worlds are and aren’t a stepping stone for 2012,” said Turner from an Aviva funded Team GB & NI training camp in South Korea.

“If you run well here of course that will set you up well for London.

“But also if you don’t run well, it’s not a marker for how you’re going to run next year.

“I train with David Oliver on the circuit so I have just got to treat it as another Diamond League race rather than getting the extra nerves. The hardest race will be the semi-final and that’s where I think the fastest races will be produced because everyone wants to make the final.”

Turner has his eyes firmly focused on forcing his way onto the podium and he feels he now has the psychological steel to perform when it matters most.

“The first hurdle is to make the final but then the final is a place where even the best athletes can buckle under pressure,” added Turner.

“But once you’re in that final it can be anyone’s game. I proved to myself last year that I can handle myself in a final and produce my best and that’s what I’m hoping happens in Daegu.

“Anyone can make a mistake. No one is talking about me, people are saying, ‘if he makes the final that’ll be good’ but I have expectations of myself and I’ve set myself a target.

“I’ve got to prove that to myself rather than other people. I am hearing people say ‘he’s trying to win a medal at the worlds’ and obviously I am trying to, everyone is.”
