Twickenham head coach Martyn Fryer has hailed the club’s strength in depth after his side set a new Middlesex County League Premier Division run-chase record on Saturday.

Skipper Carlos Nunes’ men backed up last week’s win over league leaders Ealing by successfully chasing Finchley’s imposing 362 for three on the Green in a game that also broke the record for aggregate runs scored in a day.

The Ts overcame the withdrawal of young Middlesex batsman Dan Housego, opening bowler Fawad Mullahzadah and his brother Rashid, on the morning of the match.

But 115 from Nunes, an opening stand of 120 from Tom Meredith (63) and Clint McCabe (58), and an unbeaten 57 from Dave Russell at the death steered their side to a dramatic victory.

And Fryer, who took charge during the winter, believes that is the reason league newboys Twickenham have set their sights on challenging at the top end of the table.

“There is real strength running through all our sides. We had a 16-year-old and two second team regulars step in at the weekend and they didn’t look out of place in Premier League cricket,” he said.

“If you’d said to us at Christmas that we’d be fifth and have 46 points on the board at this stage I would have bitten you’re arm off.

“It is our first year at this level and we are learning a lot of lessons, but you re-adjust your goals during the season and we are looking up rather than down.”

Finchley skipper Joshua Knappett smashed 136 before declaring on 57 overs, leaving time enough for the Ts to smash 365 for eight in reply on the notoriously quick Green outfield.

The total eclipsed the 312 for seven Barnes scored to beat North London in 2007 and Fryer took the chance to pay tribute to the efforts of Nunes - whose century almost went unnoticed amid wild celebrations at the weekend.

“With Dan Housego dropping out it was important Carlos stepped up,” he added.

“He trained well and worked on one or two shots in the nets during the week and it paid off. It was a really great effort from him.

“We felt they mistimed their declaration a little and the key to us winning was our partnerships. We never dropped below the run rate and we managed to keep the pressure on.”
