The Surrey Comet is revamping its Rose Theatre coverage to encourage a greater artistic debate in the borough.

Our paper has been there since the beginning, campaigning and fundraising for the theatre, and was delighted when the 900-seat auditorium finally opened on January 16, 2008.

Now we want to create more space for a mature artistic discussion about shows at the theatre, by engaging the people who walk through its doors each week.

We have welcomed our new official theatre critic Neville Thurlbeck, former chief reporter of the News of the World and passionate Rose Theatre fan.

Mr Thurlbeck, a Surrey Comet reader living in Hinchley Wood who has been attending shows since day one, will write regularly in an unpaid role, telling us what has caught his eye. His reviews will be published here first, starting with The Lady from the Sea starring Joely Richardson.

But we also want to hear what you have seen that aroused your artistic passions, whether it’s the Gruffalo, Rick Astley or Lady from the Sea, and the ingredients that made it so special.

If you thought a show somewhat lacklustre, tell us what could have been done better; be intelligent, be entertaining but most importantly of all, be honest. Or if you think Neville got it wrong, send us your opinion using the ‘your say’ panel or by emailing leisure@surreycomet.co.uk.

The Rose Theatre will reinstate its artist and staff blogs, giving us a back-stage sneak peek into what goes on behind the stage curtains. And our journalists will continue to update you on the news – the names, the shows, the politics and the money.

We hope the Rose will continue to bloom by giving showgoers somewhere to discuss and debate and helping the theatre learn from the people who pay to get in.
