Surbiton cycling enthusiast Riccardo Paschino has raised £800 for Surrey bowel cancer charity GUTS by cycling from Kingston all the way to Nice in the south of France – a distance of some 1975km (almost 1,230 miles), taking only 10 days to complete the feat.
The trip was not without incident, with numerous diversions (ironically due to road preparations for the Tour de France) and several encounters with dogs. Riccardo and his cycling companion Roberto also got through a lot of food and liquid - 12 litres of water daily and 90 bananas, 40 baguettes and 60 tomatoes over the ten days! Riccardo decided to support GUTS because his good friend Andrea Scala (also a keen cyclist) is a trustee of the charity and surgeon at the Royal Surrey County Hospital.
Mr Scala said: “On behalf of everyone at the charity I would like to congratulate Riccardo for completing this amazing challenge and thank him for raising valuable funds for GUTS. This year we are intending to fund some new equipment for the endoscopy department at the RSCH and the money Riccardo has raised is a very welcome contribution to the appeal.”
