Last week, ACS Cobham delighted students and staff by unveiling a newly built trio of treehouses in the Lower School playground.
Designed and built by Highlife Tree House company, the new addition to the school has been developed to promote imaginative outdoor learning and play. The three structures, connected by rope bridges, are all different in their functions and character. While the first treehouse provides a unique outdoor classroom space, the second and third are imaginative, playful structures in the form of a fairy house and a castle, complete with slides and cargo nets.
“We know that children need to be encouraged and nurtured to engage with nature in meaningful ways and the addition of these treehouses will foster creative and cooperative student play, allow some risk-taking, and provide teachers with a unique outdoor classroom space,” said Lacy Chapman, Lower School Principal at ACS Cobham.
The treehouse design was based on a consultation with teachers and students, and a review of research about creative play. The houses were unveiled this week at an opening ceremony, attended by the Lower School students and staff.
Lacy added: “We are really excited to be able to add this amazing and much-anticipated feature to our playground”
