West Molesley's Army officer turned stuntwoman Sophie Faldo has been announced the winner of the 2017 series of The Great British Bake Off on Channel 4.

The day of the final however was nearly ruined as judge Prue Leith announced the winner in a tweet, later claiming she was on holiday and was mortified by her mistake.

She wrote: “No one told me judging a #gbbo final would be so emotional. I wanted them all to win. Bravo Sophie.”

But those of us who stayed away from social media until the evening show, saw Sophie beat Steven Carter-Bailey and Kate Lyon.

The ex-army officer and trainee stunt woman did not win the last technical challenge but she consistently impressed with dazzling bakes.

After the results were announced Sophie: “I just disbelieve it, the idea of winning was such a minute possibility," she said. "I don't think I'll forget this for as long as I live.”

Sophie consistently impressed the judges especially during Pudding week in which judge, Paul Hollywood, said her pudding was of ‘Michelin starred quality’.

On her win Paul Hollywood teared up, he said: “Can I be honest? I got a little bit emotional there. It’s been a real learning curve for Sophie. To come up with that entremet for the final. I was really shocked at the standard.”

So what will Sophie do next? The once ballet dancer, ex-army officer and training stunt-woman must be in for another challenge soon.
