A zany performer described as a cross between Brian Cox, Harry Hill and Lady Gaga will be the star performer at Transition Town Kingston’s fifth birthday party.

The environmental group is made up of volunteers working to reduce our carbon footprint.

To celebrate its big day it has enlisted the help of French-based entertainer Gaia Cabaret.

Hilary Gander, from Transition Town Kingston, said: “This is us trying to reach out to people and show we are not just a bunch of fringe people.”

Gaia Cabaret will perform songs and sketches based on climate science. Dr Richard Betts, head of climate impacts, said: “[He is] like a cross between Brian Cox, Harry Hill and Lady Gaga – with a beard.”

The party will serve up food and a chance for people to look around the stalls and participate in the AGM.

Ms Gander said: “People can find out more and have some fresh food. We will have our usual high standard of home-cooked food. We are looking forward to having more people.”

They are hoping for a good turnout. Ms Gander said: “We have not really opened it up before so probably only about 20 people have come so far, but we are hoping for about 50 now or, maybe, 100.

“We are very friendly – as well as caring about the environment we are convinced communities coming together will help build a more sustainable, happier future.”

The event will take place at the Richard Mayo Centre in the United Reformed Church on May 12, from 4.30pm to 8pm.
