Officers arrested suspected criminals during a dramatic chase following a burglary in which jewels and cash were stolen.

Police believe that the men arrested near a train station in Merstham are linked to the burglary in Epsom on Sunday afternoon.

Thieves broke a back window, entered the house in Shawley Way and escaped with jewellery and foreign currency between 2pm and 3pm.

Later that afternoon at 4.25pm, four men were seen abandoning a stolen Mercedes and jumping on the back of motorcycles driven by four others in Reigate Hill, Lower Kingswood.

It is believed that the motorcycle passengers were dropped off at Merstham train station. Police arrested an 18-year-old man at the train station, but three other men ran away.

Officers gave chase and managed to arrest two of them on suspicion of burglary and taking a vehicle without consent. It is believed that the Mercedes was stolen from Finchampstead in Berkshire.

An 18-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy, from London, have been interviewed and released on bail until Tuesday, June 9.

A 21-year-old man, from London, failed to appear at court yesterday and a warrant has now been issued for his arrest.

Detective Constable Simon Evans said: "As well as speaking to anyone who witnessed the burglary in Epsom, we would also like to speak to anyone who was travelling south on the A217 towards junction 8 of the M25 around the time the car was abandoned.

"Any information, no matter how insignificant it seems, will help us to progress this investigation and bring these offenders to justice."
