This year Surbiton Festival kicked off with hundreds of revellers swarming to the area to take part in a day’s fun.

Victoria Road was pedestrianised to make way for a lively street parade with plenty of costumes and musicians who marched their way past the throng of people and along the heart of Surbiton.

Dozens of stalls such as jewellery stalls, food stalls and even tarot card readers were set up and lined the entire street on Saturday.

Malcolm Finn, a member of the Surbiton Rotary Club, said: “Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. It was just like the crowds during the Olympic torch relay – it really was that kind of atmosphere.

“It was a real local community event. There were so many great stalls - You name it the stall was there. It was just packed with people. It was a great day.”

Anna Dyson who set up a greeting cards stall for a fourth year running said the event was one she looked forward to every year.

Mrs Dyson said: “Surbiton Festival is my biggest event of the year. I always do really well. I am the first one to get my application for a stall in. It is a great event.”

A Claremont Road coffee shop employee also admitted the festival had brought in record numbers into the shop.

Joe Hoye from The Press Room said: “It was a stunning day for us. We were totally rushed off our feet all day. This will definitely be at the top of our calendar next year.”

Surbiton resident Robin Hutchinson who took part in the morning parade, said: “We had a really great turnout for the parade.

“The highlight was seeing peoples’ faces when they saw four giant guinea pigs in the parade. It was a superb.”
