A series of cultural events to celebrate the London 2012 Games has been unveiled by the council.

Kingston Council’s 17-page souvenir booklet highlights all the major Olympic events, such as the torch relay, the cycle road race and other events taking place in the historical 14-week stint between June and September.

It also details the Rose Theatre’s big screen venture inviting sporting fans to watch live highlights of the Games on a giant 8m by 4m screen over two weeks.

Other events highlighted in the programme include the regatta, the food festival and the carnival, as well as the Rotary Dragon Boat Race and the Queen’s diamond jubilee celebrations that will take place next month.

Wheelchair racer Jack Binstead, 15, from Chessington, and women’s cycling campaigner Eileen Gray, from Surbiton, have been featured in the booklet alongside Olympic athlete Karina Bryant.

Jack said: “I was not sure about being in it at first but when I saw it I enjoyed it.”

A spokesman for Kingston Council said the cost of the programme had been met by the Go Kingston Project budget, which is primarily funded by DC Leisure, the council’s leisure centre operator.

He said: “The cost of designing, printing and distributing the programme of events in Kingston works out at 36p per household.

“When you consider that a second class stamp costs 50p these days, that is exceptional value for money.”
