A mother who admitted stealing a box from a jeweller’s shop during last year’s riots has been jailed for 13 months.

Iesha Nelson, of Birrell House, Stockwell Road, SW9, initially claimed she was been innocently looking for her teenager child.

Inner London Crown Court heard on Friday, February 3, that the 31 year old’s fingerprints were found on a jewellery case in what had been a locked cabinet at Albermarie and Bond Jewellers, Brixton Road, SW9.

CCTV footage showed a woman wearing a dark hooded track suit enter the store with a man. Both went to the glass counter and were seen to put their arms into the open side of the glass case.

Nelson’s right arm could clearly be seen to enter the cabinet as if to pick something up. The same hand was then seen to go into her pocket. They both then left and police with riot shields were then seen to enter the premises.

Nelson admitted she was the woman on the CCTV, but claimed she did not know who the man was.

She then gave a full admission she took a box from the glass cabinet, and said: “I deserve whatever I get. I should not have been there you have got me bang to rights.”

The store reported about 170 pieces of silver jewellery, all valued under £50, stolen after the disorder on August 8.

The shop shutters were damaged, as well as the front door and display cabinet, estimated at a cost of at least £2000 to repair.
