A computer game that puts teenagers in the boots of marines battling sexual diseases inside intimate body parts has bagged a Bafta.

Privates won the children’s award in the secondary school education category at the Bafta’s glitzy ceremony.

But the satirical, cartoon-style game, which sees the soldiers wearing condom hats, barking out references to genitalia and firing lasers at sperm, has already been banned from the Xbox 360.

Developer Dan Marshall, of Size Five Games in Norbiton, said: “I was completely and utterly gobsmacked.

“I had managed to convince myself there was no chance Privates would win so when it did I was simply dumbfounded.”

The risqué developer joined Peppa Pig, Lego Pirates of the Caribbean, and Newsround on the winner’s podium.

In its category, Privates held off two BBC learning games, called Love Hurts and Wanna Be a Rockstar, as well as a Jamie Oliver Dream School-linked competition to find the country’s best teachers.

During the night, a star-struck Mr Marshall stumbled through an acceptance speech at the ceremony on November 27 watched by Mr Tumble, John Barnes and Warwick Davis.

He accosted one of his heroes, Nigel Planer of The Young Ones, to tell him how much the show had influenced his work, before giving the 80s TV star directions to the toilet.

Despite being banned by Microsoft Xbox 360 due to its sexual content, hardy gamers can play levels online for free.

Mr Marshall said: “The original design document broke a vast number of Xbox’s rules.

“I sent a copy to the very nice people at Xbox, who loved it, but decided that the rules needed to hold steady.”

Jo Twist, of Channel 4 Education, which commissioned the game as a sex education tool, said: “It shows you don’t have to be a huge developer to get such a commission or awards win. You just have to be good.”

A spokesman from Brook, a national sex and contraception advice charity for teenagers, said: “It’s really important to raise awareness of sexual health issues and we look forward to seeing young people’s feedback on the game.”

The next game from Size Five Games, The Swindle, is sure to gain equal attention as gamers take on the role of cyber crooks breaking into a facility to illicitly hack computers.
