A road was ripped up twice in two weeks after bungling contractors failed the job first time round.

Kingston Council contracted Aggregate Industries to resurface The Roystons, in Surbiton Hill Park to The Byeways, in mid November, after residents and motorist complained the road was uneven.

But the council was unhappy with the work done on two parts of the road and ordered Aggregate to go back and take a second stab at the job last Thursday, leaving residents once again unable to park outside their homes.

Kingston Council said the contractors would foot the bill for the corrective work as the initial efforts failed to match “acceptable standards”.

Lynne Dawkins, 39, a university lecturer who lives on The Roystons said: “If they had not cocked it up the first time we wouldn’t have to be inconvenienced again.

“It was a bit of a hassle because I have young children and I had to park round the corner somewhere else, but I suppose they enjoyed watching the works get done.”

Despite the inconvenience residents were pleased the council had finally got round to fixing the “dangerous” road bumps.

A toolmaker and keen cyclist who lives in nearby Raeburn Avenue, said: “I cycle here every day, it was awful before. It was so dangerous for cyclists. There were ruts before, like tram lines and we all got stuck in. I’m so glad they’ve fixed it - they haven’t done the other side though.”

A spokesperson for Aggregate Industries said: "Aggregate Industries revisited The Roystons last week to replace the surface that was not laid to our normally high quality standard.

“We are pleased to have a good relationship with Kingston Council and are sorry for any inconvenience that has been caused to the residents."

A spokesman for the council said the vast majority of work done by Aggregate was completed “satisfactorily first time” and that they are happy with their “overall performance”.
