Christmas lights in Surbiton went with a bang after traders raised nearly £2,500 for the festive illuminations.

Surbiton Business Community clubbed together to drum up the cash after last year's lights put on by Kingston Council left traders and shoppers “a little disappointed”.

Speaking on behalf of SBC Pat Boye said: “There was a bigger turnout this year than last, think mainly because the lights were so much better.

"Last year’s effort was pretty disappointing.

“Everyone had a jolly fun time and the public were very generous in donating money to pay for the lights.

“Hopefully next year we can get a celebrity to switch the lights on for us."

The day of fun kicked off at 3pm with a mince pie bake off and an advent calendar hunt in Victoria Road.

Young singers from Infants Maple Infants, Tolworth Junior and Infants, St Mathews Church of England and Surbiton High School got shoppers in the mood with Christmas carols.

The high street also hosted African dance act Bode Lawal, who have performed at the Rose Theatre, and a raffle featuring gift voucher prizes.

After the anticipation of the lights, which went on just after 5pm, shoppers disappeared down the high street looking to grab some Christmas bargains.
