North Kingston’s long-awaited new secondary school moved a step closer when its three providers signed its partnership contract.

The Kingston Educational Trust, formed of Kingston Council, Kingston College and Kingston University, beat the Church of England in a competition in January 2011 to run the school.

The school, which has been plagued by controversy over its size, site and design, is due to open between Tiffin Girls’ School and Fern Hill Primary School on Richmond Road, Kingston, in September 2015.

The Government announced £500m of capital funding for schools in July, but Kingston’s allocation has yet to be revealed, leaving uncertainty about the school’s funding.

The contract was signed on September 14, by Duncan Clarke, the council’s director of learning and children’s services, Kingston University Vice-Chancellor Julius Weinberg and Kingston College principal Peter Mayhew-Smith.
