Skiers are being urged to sign up for this year’s silly suburban skiing event.

Surbiton Ski Sunday, which is now in its third year, sees competitors ditch their skis and strap blocks of ice to their feet before racing down the 21m course in St Mark’s Hill.

Spectators can cheer on the skiers who slide down the road, next to Surbiton station, in a bid to beat Jack Dimes’ course record of 10.66 seconds at the race on Sunday, October 16.

Robin Hutchinson, president of the Homage de Fromage Cheese Club and founder of suburban skiing said: “As we build up to the Olympics in 2012, Surbiton Ski Sunday is one of the key warm up events.

“It is great fun to take part in and it is great fun to watch.”

In the past two years nearly 100 people have taken park in the event, which raises money for the Shooting Star Children’s Hospice in Hampton.

The hospice cares for terminally ill children and their families.
