Kingston and Surbiton's MP has said he would be sorry to lose New Malden and Old Malden but glad to finally represent all of Kingston if constituency boundaries are changed.

A Boundary Commission report released on Monday proposed moving Canbury and Tudor wards back into Edward Davey's seat.

Coombe Hill and Coombe Vale, which are currently part of Richmond Park, represented by Zac Goldsmith, would be shifted into a new combined New Malden and Wimbledon seat containing the Beverley, St James and Old Malden wards.

Mr Davey said: “These are the earliest draft proposals so there’s a long way to go before these are finalised.

“If they turn out to be future constituency boundaries I will certainly be extremely upset to lose New Malden and Old Malden where I feel very much at home.

“There’s some logic to Tudor and Canbury joining the other Kingston wards and it would be a real privilege to represent those areas.”

The Liberal Democrat MP said he didn’t know whether the changes would affect party fortunes but insisted that the voters should decide.

He said: “I really want to listen to what local people have to say rather than it being driven by political calculation.

“There will be people in Old Malden and New Malden who will be upset by these proposals and I can understand that.”

His preferred option had been for the northern part of Beverley ward, which contains parts of New Malden, to rejoin a Richmond Park constituency including wealthy Coombe Vale and Coombe Hill.
