Three police officers who tried to save the life of a man who had fallen into a river have been commended at a ceremony.

PC Kevin Price, Sergeant Nev Parsons and PC Ian Madelin attempted to rescue Anthony Heffernan, after he had fallen into the River Wey in Walton on December 28, 2009.

PC Price managed to pull Mr Heffernan out of the extremely cold water, but unfortunately the 55-year-old taxi driver was pronounced dead later that day, after being taken to St Peter’s Hospital, in Chertsey.

The three officers all received a Royal Human Society Resuscitation Certificate and a Chief Constable’s Commendation for their efforts at the Surrey Police commendations ceremony at Guildford Cathedral, on Thursday, July 7.
