Dozens of Kingston-based job centre, court and education workers are taking part in a national 24-hour strike over pensions.

Kingston College staff are outside the building with banners and placards, in what is their first picket line in 16 years.

Most have the courses have finished and a skeleton of staff is in place to ensure minimal disruption.

Peter Yiannakou, head of Kingston College’s branch of the University and College Union (UCU), said it was not their intention to close the college.

He said: “This is not an anti-college demonstration.

“We have the full support of the management and all credit to the principal for his support.”

The Public and Commercial Services Union, the National Union of Teachers and the Association of Teachers and Lecturers are also protesting.

They argue that plans to change public service pension schemes will mean more work and contributions, for a reduced pension.

Kingston College has a petition on the picket line for those that wish to show their support and some of the striking staff will travel to central London later to join the mass march and rally.
