A showbiz mad pensioner who completed a 460 mile walk from London to Scotland has already set his sights on his next charity feat.

Former film extra John Dodd donned his kilt to walk between the homes of two Scottish entertainers, Sir Harry Lauder’s in Tooting and Sir Jimmy Shand’s Auchtermuchty home in Fife, Scotland.

The 66-year-old, from Surbiton, set off on April 21 and met Sir Jimmy’s son at the finish line 28 days later, on May 18, raising £867 along the way.

The money will go towards Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, Demelza Hospice Care for Children, St Columba’s Hospice, the Blue Cross and The Prostate Cancer Charity.

Mr Dodd said: “The walk went extremely well, I had a lot of response from lovely hospitable people.

“It was certainly something that I enjoyed and I would like to extend my thanks to Sir Jimmy Shand’s son who was a delightful gentleman.”

Mr Dodd said the most gruelling thing about the walk was carrying his heavy rucksack but his personal highlight was feeding lambs in the North Pennines.

He said: “I was stopped for photos and the smiles that I got in the kilt were nice. I got a lot of nice smiles especially by the young girls going on the razzle in York on a Saturday night, it was all good fun.”

Spurred on by childhood trips to the theatre, Mr Dodd’s passion for show business has led him across the country in a series of themed charity walks, In four weeks time he will set off for his Midsummer Murders location themed walk, which he hopes will take him 12 days.

Mr Dodd said: “I don’t tire of the walks because each day is different. I get help and the charities give me the impetus to carry on.

“I am a young active pensioner. What people do now in their 80s and 90s we wouldn’t have thought possible, it’s just wonderful.”
