A serious accident between a cyclist and bus passenger has reignited safety concerns over a stretch of road heading out of Weybridge.

The Weybridge Road accident on Wednesday, March 30, sparked three-and-a-half hours of road closures and heavy traffic throughout the area.

The cyclist was not injured in the 9am accident, but the pedestrian, who had got off a bus, suffered serious head injuries, including a fractured skull, fractured eye socket and bruising to the face.

South East Coast Ambulance Service confirmed it took a 48-year-old man to St George's Hospital, Tooting, for treatment.

Councillor Miles Macleod spoke out about the safety of the road in 2008, when another serious accident took place.

In that instance, a 21-year-old man was left in a critical condition and another girl was cut out of a car by firefighters.

Surrey County Council (SCC) insisted the road was not dangerous, but Coun Macleod said the time had come for action.

Coun Macleod said: “It’s up to SCC to take action and the position given is they want sufficient evidence that it’s dangerous to justify taking action.

“I think we have that now and I’ve always thought it’s tragic that people have to be injured for anything to happen.”

A spokesman for SCC said it worked closely with the police’s casualty reduction officer and the highways team, and that police drew their attention to any roads that needed looking at.

Police are treating the collision as an accident.
