It could be third time lucky for a Streatham contender taking a shot at being Britain’s best beatboxer.

For the last nine years Marv-ill, real name Marv Rothery, 23, from Streatham Vale, has been working on his Beatboxing techniques.

His admiration of 80s beatboxing legend Doug E. Fresh inspired him to take up the art of producing drum beats and musical sounds using the mouth, nasal passage and throat.

On March 26 Marv-ill entered UK Beatbox championships for the third time, this year getting through to the grand final.

Excited about the prospect of winning, he said: “Every single champion has gone on to travel the world and be a big success. I’d be over the moon to win. I’d love to get that status. It would be great for my street-cred.”

The 23-year-old has made a profession out of his hobby, visiting schools to teach children how to beatbox and performing live shows at venues across the UK including Jamm and Hootananny in Brixton. He is a rapper and music producer in his spare time.

Marv is preparing his routine for the last round of the competition at the O2 Academy in Islington, on June 11, in the hope of winning the 2011 title and a brand new Vauxhall Corsa.
