There are empty shelves in Waitrose in Surbiton today after cold weather hit morning deliveries across London.

Waitrose said that snow-related problems getting lorries in and out of a distribution centre in Kent was to blame.

One shopper said: "There's empty shelves everywhere. Meat supplies are down. Chicken supplies are right down, fruit and veg, everything.

"It looks just like shops used to look with the war. I can remember rationing.

"They have been promised something will come through today but they don't know what or how much."

A spokesman for Waitrose said: "It is a snow-related issue but deliveries are on their way at the moment so everything should be OK."
