Hundreds of students marched into Hollyfield School grounds during a noisy protest against tuition fees rises.
Earlier a few students punched a van while marching along Surbiton Hill Road.
A frustrated taxi driver got out of his vehicle and shouted at the march.
The students made their way to the gates of Hollyfield School on Surbiton Hill shouting "Join us. Join us".
But headteacher Stephen Chamberlain, who had banned his students from joining in, said: "I don't see why 15 or 16 year olds should be out of school. I have got a duty of care and I encouraged them to write to their MP instead."
Police are escorting the protest, which began at Penhryn Road but has turned into an impromptu march.
Officers closed off Surbiton Hill in both directions to allow marchers to leave the school site.
