A woman who once cooked burger and chips for our future king is set to retire from Tolworth's much-loved bowling alley after 34 years.

Jean Freeman, 64, started work as a cleaner at Charrington Bowl in 1977, and retires on December 8, her 65th birthday.

She currently works in the bar there, but for many years worked in the cafe, which is where she cooked for Prince William and Harry, who were bowling with friends.

Miss Freeman said: "They both came in one day with their friends and all their minders. William was about 12 at the time and we'd all been told earlier in the day not to say anything.

"I was really excited, I had to keep eye contact but treat them as normal.

"They were just like normal kids, eating normal food, and came up and asked me for burger, chips and a Pepsi.

"They were so polite, no airs and graces, and they ate all the food I cooked for them."

Mrs Freeman has also served star bowlers and actors from The Bill.

She said the bowling alley has not changed much since she started and is still a family place.

She said: "It has always been filled with families. It's a really fun place to work and I've made so many friends there. I'll miss all the league bowlers because I've got to know them quite well."

She remembers hoardes of bikers using the alley as a meeting place in the 70s, and said it was an exciting place to work when you saw all the bikes pulling up.

Despite 34 years there, Mrs Freeman never harboured dreams of a bowling career and instead chose to watch and said one of the most exciting times was the world tournament when she started in 1977.

Mrs Freeman said she would be sad to leave after so many years, but wanted a break to spend time with her three grandchildren - Jordan, Charlie and Paris.

She also began volunteering at the YMCA, in the kitchen, about five months ago, which she thoroughly enjoys.

She said: "I absolutely love it. Everybody is so nice there and it's really rewarding. There aren't many people that do things like that. I couldn't do it full-time though, I'm looking forward to some time off."
