Shoppers will not be left in the dark after traders stepped up to fund a Christmas event in Surbiton this year.

Earlier this month the Surrey Comet reported how the council withdrew funding for lights and a celebration in Victoria Road, Surbiton, because of the economic downturn.

Disappointed shopkeepers took a dim view of the move.

But Councillor Yogan Yoganathan said the article had prompted businesses and residents to come forward to help.

He said enough had offered their assistance to allow a small event between 3pm and 6pm on Monday, November 22, although Victoria Road will still be without lights.

Waitrose, Specsavers, Marks and Spencer, McDonald's, Surbiton Flyer and Podd Sound have all stepped in to the breach.

The community will help switch on the Christmas tree lights for the first time and the borough's brass band will play with Barisons wind band.

Councillor Bob Steed said: "This is a benchmark year because we've got to change and start getting the whole community involved."

A meeting about working towards the big society, with all welcome to attend, will be held at the Surbiton Flyer at 6pm.

Surbiton Rotary Club will be there with their sleigh and the switch-on will happen at 5.15pm, outside the station.
