A youth band has been handed the prestigious honour of representing Britain at the veterans day parade and 9/11 10th anniversary service in New York next year.

Surbiton Royal British Legion Youth Marching Band will fly to America in November next year to proudly march and perform.

They are desperately trying to raise their profile between now and then so they can raise the funds to send themselves over there.

The band has about 30 members and plans to invite former members back for the special New York performance, which will further add to the cost.

They currently teach players from scratch and survive on money they raise themselves, and the odd council grant.

Drummer and warrant officer Ross Millard, 29, said: "Hopefully we'll attract new members off the back of this and the kids will think 'this is what we joined for'. I was really surprised when they selected us.

"There are much bigger bands in the country so I really hope we can follow it through and raise enough money to get us all out there."

The veterans day parade has been organised in New York since 1929 and more than 20,000 people participate.
