A Surbiton man flew out to Haiti this morning, despite riots and gunfire in the suburb where he will set up a 300-bed cholera treatment centre.

Carwyn Hill founded the Haiti Hospital Appeal in 2006, and set up the country's first spinal unit after the devastating earthquake on January 12, 2010.

He decided to return to the country after hearing last week the cholera epidemic had spread to Cap Haitien, the second city, where his charity is based.

He decided to proceed with his mission, despite the news UN peacekeepers yesterday shot dead a rioter in Quartier Morin area where he will set up the unit.

The charity has launched an appeal for donations and medical volunteers.
