Excited pupils welcomed home two intrepid adventurers after a 22-day, 2,105km bike ride from Surbiton to Morocco.

Rob Tuck and Sam Palmer raised funds for the Landirani Trust’s campaign for bicycle ambulances in Malawi.

Before setting off, Mr Palmer and Mr Tuck, whose father is caretaker and brother is a teacher at Coombe Hill Infants School, told students about their plans and showed off their bikes.

Deputy headteacher Maureen Shepherd said: “The children were very excited when they got back from their trip and gave Rob and Sam a great reception.

“The children have been working hard to raise the money in the buckets, by doing jobs at home as well as through the recycling craft sale and the harvest sale.

“During the trip we monitored it on a map and had a totaliser showing how much we had collected so the children had been feeling involved in doing their bit.

“The children at Namayanga send letters, gifts, etc to our school. It is a wonderful way to make the children aware of the needs of others and also to find our more about the school life of children in Malawi.”
