Surbiton Farmers' Market has celebrated 12 months since it first opened its gates.

The monthly event's future was thrown into doubt over the summer when the council proposed to charge £575 per market.

However, a compromise charge of £150 was agreed after 350 people objected to the original plans.

Geoffery Doyle, co-chair of the market committee, said the market had raised around £6,000 for good causes, helped local businesses and promoted local produce.

The committee is now seeking accreditation with the national farmers' retail and markets association, which stipulates products must be reared, grown or processed by the supplier.

He said: “It really builds a Surbiton community spirit. A lot of people have the view of the Good Life, so we say the Good Life just got better.

“We want to continue the farmers' market as long as there's interest. Over time we want to bring in additional stallholders on the back of what the community wants.”

Future plans include encouraging more fringe events at the markets, and forging closer links with the annual Surbiton festival.
