Bollywood tunes and traditional Gujurati folk music helped 1,200 people celebrate the Hindu festival of Navratri.

Crowds from across London gathered in Tolworth to celebrate the nine nights festival last weekend.

The Sarvoday Hindu Organisation, founded in Kingston 35 years ago, hired a band from India for £8,000.

Mahendra Thakar, president of the organisation, said: “It was the best Navratri festival we ever had. We had double the crowd we have had before.

“It's a chance for old people and young people to get together for nine nights and dance in the evening.

“We were able to get people from a very young age of three to 80 dancing together in the same place with the same music for three hours.

“Getting young people to come to an event like this is a great achievement – there's more cohesion between age groups.”

Mr Thakar said the group, which has 500 members, wants to attract members of the whole community to its events.
