Edward Davey, MP for Kingston and Surbiton, ranks in the bottom five Liberal Democrat performers in the coalition Government, according to a survey of the party’s members.

Mr Davey, who is a junior minister in the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, was rated effective by 28 per cent of those polled, while 17 per cent rated him ineffective.

But Stephen Tall, who conducted the 600 person survey on party members’ website Liberal Democrat Voice, said the low rating was due to his relatively low profile, after 55 per cent said they had “no opinion” of Mr Davey’s performance.

Mr Tall said: “What we are seeing most of all is those who come low down in the rankings are there because they are not as visible as other members.

“The point of this survey is to provide an incentive for our spokesmen to think more about how they communicate internally with our members, as well as externally.”

The top three performers in the “net effectiveness” rankings were Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg (65 per cent), Business Secretary Vince Cable (60 per cent) and Environment Secretary Chris Huhne (51 per cent).
