A second hero who saved a baby on the Cambridge Road estate has spoken of the moment he realised he had to head into the smoke.

Tommy Mackay, 22, was playing football on the estate's J-pitch when he saw the smoke coming from Madingley block.

He said: "Me and a couple of friends ran up. One woman was shouting 'my baby is up there'.

"There was a lot of smoke. There was a Chinese guy at the door hitting it with a golf club, but he couldn't get in. I kicked it in, ran inside and put a sheet across the baby and ran out.

"The building was on fire. It was all smoke and you could feel the heat. The baby was small, we think about 12 months old."
