A hero has emerged from the events of today's fire at the Cambridge Road estate.

Alan Woodman, 60, was in the bottom of Madingley block when children saw smoke coming from upstairs.

Mr Woodman climbed 12 storeys with another man and knocked down the door of the flat where they think the fire started.

Inside, the two men found a baby in the flat's living room, and quickly got him out, helping another confused woman get out of the building as they descended.

He said: "I went up there with a young lad and he smashed the door in once we had the Chubb lock off.

"He grabbed the baby, which was in the front room, and we noticed the kitchen was on fire. The smoke was getting thicker and thicker.

"On the way down we bumped into a woman who was walking backwards and struggling and I spent the next few minutes helping her down."

Mr Woodman would like to speak to the young man with him. Do you know who it was? Email drankin@london.newsquest.co.uk.
