A summer celebration got too hot for two Surbiton houses, when sparks from garden candles caused a late night fire that destroyed a garage.
Firefighters were called to the incident in Raeburn Avenue, Berrylands, at 3am on Thursday, July 8, after residents raised the alarm.
The blaze, which took firefighters from Surbiton and New Malden 15 minutes to put out, completely destroyed the garage and caused heat damage to the rear of two houses, but did not cause any injuries.
A fire service spokesman said: “They put the candles out but they obviously blew them out and caused sparks which caused damage to the decking and shed.
“People could keep these candles well away from sheds and fences and decking, and make sure they are put out properly.”
