Shreddie the blogging dog finished the longest walk of her life on Saturday, May 1, nearly two months after setting off from Minehead on a 630-mile trek along the south-west coastal path to raise money for Kingston Bereavement Service.

The wheaten terrier’s Surbiton owner, David Scott, decided to support the charity after it counselled him following the death of his wife Mitsou last year. He started the walk on March 10, which would have been her 50th birthday.

Sheep, sand and sausages were regular features of the dog blog, which kept Kingston schoolchildren updated on the pair’s progress as they walked along the north Somerset coast, and past Land’s End and Devon’s Jurassic Coast.

On day 35, she told readers: “Met an Irish rescue dog by the name of Jimmy who warned us about some cows with young in the field ahead, so we took his advice and walked along the beach instead. This is much more my cup of tea, almost three miles of sand to play on.”

A glass of champagne welcomed Mr Scott when he crossed the finishing line in Poole, while his pampered canine looked forward to a week of rest and relaxation at a friend’s house.

Mr Scott said: “What I really enjoyed, which I did not realise at the time, was the solitude. I did have some friends come down for a few days but I really enjoyed the days when I was on my own with Shreddie.

“She got into a little routine. When we were out in the country, if there were no sheep she would wait until I was out of sight and she could not see me and then bound towards me and wait again.”

The pair are now more than 80 per cent towards their £5,000 fundraising goal, and hope they will reach their target in the coming weeks.

Sheila Nardone, manager of Kingston Bereavement Service, walked the final stretch with the pair, and said: “He was elated to finish and looked very healthy. He looked like he had been in the Mediterranean for a few weeks because he was so brown.

“Shreddie was a bit tired. For the last few mile stretch she was pulling him along, so I think she had got used to the routine of walking every day. She had been fantastic, and they supported each other.”

Donations can be made at justgiving.com/mitsou, or cheques payable to Kingston Bereavement Service can be sent to 53-55 Canbury Park Road, Kingston KT2 6LQ.
