New Malden-based charity Malden Care Scheme offers friendly help to housebound residents who cannot turn to a relative or neighbour for support.

The independent volunteer scheme has a team of helpers who run errands for users.

Many users simply need driving to the hospital, doctor or dentist but the charity can also help with everything from picking up prescriptions to fixing basic household repairs.

Elderly, disabled or housebound residents from the New and Old Malden area can call the charity from 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday.

A duty officer will listen to their needs then allocate the task to an available volunteer.

The charity receives an average of 10 calls every week and volunteers are only asked to help on an occasional basis so busy people or those volunteering for other charities can participate.

The charity was founded in 1975 and is supported by the Rotary Club of New Malden and Churches Together in Malden. Donations are also received from clients who use Malden Care.

Chairman Anne Cann said many clients choose to use Malden Care because it provides a friendly, good neighbourly service.

There are currently 22 active duty officers running the service but more are needed if Malden Care is to continue successfully providing aid.

The charity is appealing for more volunteers to help it continue to give invaluable support to those who need it.
