Our Where and When competition on April 14, which featured a picture of the Elite cinema in 1954, triggered a wealth of memories for our readers. This week, we join some of those film lovers on their trip down Memory Lane.

The picture of the Elite cinema in Clarence Street brings back lots of happy memories of going there between the 1940s and 1950s.

I remember going to see the Mummy's Hand and coming out with a friend feeling very scared.

The Jolson Story and Jolson Sings Again on one bill is another happy memory.

I was upset when C&A took over. I do get upset about many things that have gone in Kingston, including that lovely clock that used to hang above Walkers jewellery shop.

I know it's supposed to be progress.

NANCY SMALLWOOD Heron Close Eastbourne The building was, of course, the grand Elite cinema in Clarence Street, Kingston.

You could also dine in the magnificent restaurant in the building.

A few years previous to its closure, Granada purchased the cinema, which was then renamed Century-Elite.

One of my precious memories was that four musicians and myself were invited by the manager to supply music for their farewell party. We started at 1am and entertained for approximately four hours. I shall never forget that evening. The entire staff were truly excellent in every way, but so sad at losing their jobs.

This event took place on New Year's day but I can't remember which year.

The building was demolished and C&A was erected. It traded for a few years and then became Wilkinsons.

R GRIFFITHS Norbiton Common Road Kingston The building is the Elite Cinema. I think the picture was taken in the late 40s.

In the 50s this was a place where the Teddy boys met. If there were tourists about they would ask the boys to stand by the steps to have a photograph taken.

The Surrey Comet also published a picture of them outside this building.

Also on the London Road side, a caf called the Haveasnack was opened, where everyone could go and have a coffee.
