A Kingston-based football team will be dribbling its way across Europe to set a world record for the longest football tour.

Lenton Griffins Football Club, which has registered with the Surrey FA especially for the tour, will play 14 games in 14 countries over 33 days, ending in Morocco.

The £6,000 they hope to raise will go towards the Bobby Moore Fund for bowel cancer and there are still two places in the squad up for grabs.

Organiser Martin Dale, 25, who lives in Long Ditton, said: "The team is originally from Nottingham University and we toured Barbados in 2000.

"We wanted to do a tour of four countries in Europe and I got thinking we could win a world record with this. I contacted Guinness and they said they were interested in the project.

"It is the equivalent to playing a game every Saturday, Monday and Wednesday for four-and-a-half weeks so it's by no means going to be easy."

The tour starts with a game in England on Saturday, July 3, before travelling to Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Germany, Luxembourg, Austria, Lichtenstein, Italy, France, Andorra, Spain, Portugal and Morocco. The tour bus will cover a massive 5,000 miles.

Megabowl (who????) has already helped the team, but a main sponsor, whose name will adorn the kit, the bus and in publications, is still required.

The team is also looking for two players of a decent footballing standard the opposition will be amateur to semi-professional level and the number of games will require good fitness. The team's ages range from 18 to the mid-20s.
