Well, that's that then.

There is always next Wednesday's game against Monaco to look forward to. But I for one cannot see them not scoring, which means we will have to score four. So our chances must be slim.

Having said that, they were in a worse position than us before their home leg against Real. And look what happened there.

Let's just hope we have a bit more luck than we enjoyed against Newcastle United at St James' Park.

Claudio Ranieri summed it up perfectly.

"I think we could have played for another two hours without scoring," he said after seeing John Terry hit the post from point-blank range deep into injury time.

"But I am very pleased with our performance. The lads reacted very well after the Monaco defeat. I think we deserved a point."

It was good to see Scott Parker land the Young Player of the Year award, although the lion's share of the credit for that should probably go to his time at Charlton.

Having had to fit in with Claudio Ranieri's policy of squad rotation at the Bridge since his move, Parker himself conceded it was probably his form for his former club that had brought him the award.

"This award is recognition from my fellow professionals, so it makes you realise you are doing something right," he said.

"I had only been at Chelsea a couple of weeks when the votes were counted, so this shows people have voted on what I did at Charlton. That was the club that gave me my big chance and helped me do what I am doing now.

"It's been a brilliant year. It was always going to be tough leaving Charlton and take a bit of time to settle in at Chelsea. But I am happy with the way things are going."
