Families have enjoyed unexpected time off school and work by having fun in the snow-covered borough.

Despite massive losses in the country’s economy and widespread travel misery, many of Croydon’s icy roads have become sites of snowball fights proving that the cold weather is not all doom and gloom.

South Norwood residents have been sledding and the number of snowmen on the park’s playing fields has been steadily increasing.

Croydon’s dogs are not missing out on the action either. Trainer Hillary George took advantage of the snow to teach her latest project, five-month-old puppy Major, some new lessons in Lloyd Park.

The Labrador Retriever cross is in training to become a guide dog.

Mrs George said: "He loves the snow, especially when it is freshly fallen."

Elsewhere in the borough playgrounds have become sites for wintery fun. Children at the Birdhurst Day Nursery in South Croydon have enjoyed exploring the snow, some for the first time.

Teacher Cilla Fitchett said: “Children and staff played on a sledge, made snow angels and then built a 5ft snowperson, followed up by a hot chocolate party indoors. It was a great experience and fun for all ages.”
