Disadvantaged Surbiton teenagers get the download

A free internet cafe for disadvantaged teenagers is set to open in Surbiton next month, after it was given a £10,000 lottery grant.

The Near Hope Club, based in Victoria Avenue, hopes to rent an empty shop in the same street and fill it with 12 computers.

It will be used as a meeting place and provide computer training for young people who cannot afford to have the internet at home.

The club, set up a year ago, has so far been run by seven volunteers who have funded self help groups and football clubs from their own pockets.

Treasurer Dickson Odongo said: “There are young people hanging round doing nothing. Something like this, where they can come in and use computers, will get them off the streets.”

Another organisation to receive a lottery grant is the Kingston & District Welcare Association, which received £3,540 to fund workshops for parents with pre-school aged children.

Activities will include story time, messy play, garden explorers, music and movement, as well as cooking and eating.

This sounds a goood idea, but they will need to be careful that it doesn't end up a nightmare. The YMCA already causes some problems. I hope this doesn't cause loads of rowdy and threatening teenagers to hang around the area causing trouble. It's a shame, but often these things end up causing more problems than they solve.

Totally agree, Tony. These schemes seem well intentioned, but there is often no one 'on duty' to turn away those who will abuse the facilities.

People need to realise that a lot of these teenagers have problems that lead to them not reacting to facilities like these in the way most people would.

I also feel that this is too close to the YMCA. The problems there seem to have subsided (hope I am not speaking too soon!), but having another 'attraction' so close by may reverse this.

I feel sorry for the residents of Victoria Avenue. It seems that a few of the houses down there have fallen into dis-repair and into the hands of these hostels which seems at odds with what should be a very sought after road.
