Surrey schoolboy and keen gardener Fabian Bate's name will live on at a field where he regularly visited.

The 12-year-old who passed away from leukaemia in 2014 has had the area of land at Garsons of Esher renamed to 'Fabien's Fields.'

A keen gardener at the family home near Hampton Court, Fabian was a regular visitor to Garsons – and the organisation set up in his memory, Fabian’s Childhood Cancer Trust, is the Garsons' nominated charity of the year.

“We would like to say a huge thank you to Garsons for the wonderful honour of naming their bean fields after him,” Fabian’s mum Lydia said.

“Fabian would be so proud as Garsons was very close to his heart and he particularly enjoyed spending time in their pick-your-own fields.

"We have very special memories of his last summer and Fabian picking his own fruit and veg at Garsons. He loved being there.

“His favourite pastime was growing things. He had his own vegetable plot and was fanatical about growing, amongst other things, herbs. Even his name means ‘bean grower’ so the naming of the fields is very apt.”

At Fabian’s Childhood Cancer Trust, they offer support for families who have a child diagnosed with cancer. One example is by providing ‘treat bags’ for parents staying on the wards of the children’s cancer unit at the Royal Marsden Hospital. They are also raising funds for vital testing equipment.

“I never had the pleasure of meeting Fabian but he was clearly a very special little boy who adored his gardening,” said director of Garsons Ben Thompson.

“We are delighted to pay tribute to him with this special naming of our bean fields.”
