An early morning fire at an award-winning fish and chip in Norbiton has caused damage to the ground floor of the building.

Firefighters from Surbiton and Kingston tackled the blaze at Fish! Kitchen on the corner of Coombe Road and Cobham Road just after 8am this morning.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said 15 per cent of the ground floor had been damaged by the fire, but that firefighters were able to put out the flames by 8.35am.

Fish! Kitchen, which opened in 2006, was named the best food service operator at the National Fish and Chip Awards 2017 on January 26.

James Robson, director of CNM estates who works opposite the fish and chip shop, said: "There seemed to be one worker who was still in his fish whites who was standing outside the shop soon after.

"The firemen spent about 15 minutes putting it out. Seemed to have it all under control very quickly.

"They didn’t even close the road which as a miracle in rush hour and they caused minimal disruption so praise due there.

"Happy to see that no people have been hurt, the incident was dealt with professionally and hopefully they will be back open ASAP."

Charlee Allan, a director at Fish! Kitchen, said that no one was harmed in the fire and that they hope to reopen the restaurant this evening.
