Has buried booty been snatched from under the floor of a lock-up behind Angeline Nails and Beauty in a Hatton Garden-style heist?

The Worcester Park nail salon, in Central Road, became wrapped up in a bizarre robbery after a safe room was breached and the concrete floor drilled into to secure hidden valuables.

It is believed burglars smashed their way into the fire escape, pried open a cast-iron door behind the business and drilled a hole in the brick wall between 5pm on Sunday, January 22, and 5pm on Monday, January 23.

Co-owner David Doan, 24, of Mount Road in Mitcham, said the gap could have been used to check if anyone nearby could come across the trespassers.

The break-in is reminiscent of the Hatton Garden heist where an aged gang-of-seven facilitated and stole £14m worth of valuables, included gold, diamonds and sapphires.

It was dubbed the largest burglary in English legal history and is now being turned into movie that is due out later this year.

Mr Doan said of the recent break-in: “I park out the back and didn’t notice anything strange on Friday evening, but on Sunday I saw that the fire escape had been broken into.

“I was worried and didn’t call the police at first, but did after I had spoken to my landlord. I was pretty scared.

“It is clear that it happened recently because the sand inside was still wet, it hadn’t dried out.

“I spoke to some neighbours who said they saw a white van at the weekend and thought they were looking at the foundations there, but it would be strange for them to do that.

“I’m extremely concerned. I was worried to catch them in the middle of the act, panicked and left. I’m too scared to go out through the back, I go out through the front now because it feels safer.

“The door was heavily secured, I think there must have been something really valuable there.”

A CCTV camera points directly at the fire escape, but no footage was captured as the hard drive was full.

Richard Johnson, 46, who was shown around the breached area by Mr Doan, said in a post on Facebook: “The purpose was to retrieve something buried under the floor, beyond the second reinforced door.

“Clearly, this event had been planned years before, perhaps as long ago as the concrete floor was laid. Most likely it pre-dates the time of most, if not all the current residents and traders."

A former employee Bank Chambers, said files and probates were stored in the room and that a safe could have been in the corner where the hole is now.

A spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police said: "No access has been gained to the premises (the salon) itself and noting was reported stolen.”
