A YouTube star with more than a million subscribers will raise awareness for the Water Aid charity by trudging through mud and clambering over obstacles.

George Benson, of Walton, will take on the Tough Sht course which the group has designed to highlight poor sanitation across the globe.

The 22-year-old said: "It blows my mind that more people in the world have access to a mobile phone than they do a toilet and that often means many people have no choice but to do their business outside.

"That not only compromises people’s safety and dignity, but also spreads deadly diseases."

Mr Benson's Fifa video game-themed YouTube channel has some 1.1m followers, while a separate video blogging channel, focused on travel and exploration, has notched 200,000.

He signed up as Water Aid's YouTube ambassador in March this year.

A Water Aid spokeswoman said: "For one in three people around the world, their toilets are makeshift, overflowing or simply don’t exist, spreading diarrhoeal diseases that kill around 315,000 children every year.

"Women going to the toilet outside may face harassment and even attack, and girls drop out of school unable to manage their periods privately. Chances of education and a better future are all but lost."

Mr Benson will take on the challenge on Saturday.
